Leo Strauss proposed the esoteric writing and exoteric writing theory in his famous book Persecution and the Art of Writing, which offered a new strategy for the acceptance of texts, that's to say taking into consideration the influence of Persecution, and then discuss the esoteric connotation of works. Also the close reading method initiated by Anglo-American New Criticism, provided a methodology basis. The exact situation of Mudan in the years of 50 s to 70 s, the 20 t h century, offered the possibility for his esoteric writing, and in his early years he benefited a lot from the New Criticism, which means the Close Reading method may works well in illuminating his poems. In this thesis, Mudan's poems written after 1949 were seen as a whole system and the way of creating and communicating of 50s' part was in accord with Strauss' s exoteric writing theory while 70s' part esoteric writing theory. Through close reading we found that both these complexion were derived from the menace of mainstream ideology, i.e. Strauss' s so called persecution. While seen from another aspect, it was exactly the reason why Mudan had achieved so much in the richness of his works' meaning.By close reading we found that beyond exoteric writing which satisfied mainstream ideology, Mudan also expressed opinions from his inner mind through some esoteric means. He thought deeply the themes such as existence, ideality, friendship and other topics of life in his own way. In a word, Mudan's poems written after 1949 had a richer connotation then people usually thought. He was a real Aged poet in his times.
