With the rapid development of the multi-ethnic literature in the United States, the Chinese-American literature has been gradually gaining its weight in American literature. A lot of Chinese-American women writers were praised by the critics as well as by the readers for the unique and unforgettable female images those writers invented and made the American literature full of vigor and energy. No doubt that Amy tan is one of those talent writers. Her masterpieces pay great attention to the living conditions and mental states of the Chinese female immigrates and show us how they go through the hardships in the process of growing up. She speaks highly of the bravery and courage of these women when they try so desperately to seek their identities although they’ve got lost and puzzled and she hopes the readers could be inspired by their strong wills and their resolute perseverance. The fourth novel of Amy Tan The Bonesetter’s Daughter talks about those women’s growth in depth. After reading her mother’s memoirs, the heroine Ruth finally got a better understanding of her mother as well as the Chinese culture. Instead of getting lost and rejecting her identity, she finally recognized her identity and became more mature. It is probable that everyone gets troubles and becomes puzzled when he or she begins to age, but things are even worse to those Chinese-American generations. The protagonist Ruth has been always wandering in a space full of confusions and chaos, and she has confronted a series of hardships and challenges in such a space. Therefore, the geographical space, social space and individual psychological space of the text are discussed to analyze Ruth’s growth with the help of spatial criticism. This spatial study can be an easier access to understand the social and cultural connotations the space carries and reveal Ruth’s inner change from innocence to maturity. Influenced by the enlightenment of the heroine, the conclusions could be drawn that only keeping balance between the two cultures the Chinese-American generations would not get lost and thus make a more proper planning of their life and get ready for any challenges on their way of growing-up.
