In the process of Chinese film history,30s is a special and sensitive age, when The Modern Screen is a rather important magazine. It has great value not only because it triggers a heated debate about "soft" film theory and "hardness" film theory but provides abundant and more realistic film information for enriching Chinese film theory. But to one’s regret, the magazine has been criticized and denied as well as even has been attached with the label saying "Serving for the exploiting class and bourgeoisie". As is well known to us that through the past years, class contradiction was pretty severe and culture was fully instructed by ideology. In the magazine, culture connotation is fully suppressed by political struggle. So in the previous works about the history of film, we only saw the political criticism towards The Modern Screen. As for the detailed information and specialized research, it’s rare that we do the detailed research and careful understanding towards the film theory of The Modern Screen.The paper aimed to do a deep research into the analysis of The Modern Screen according to the careful reading of the text or content towards the film history theory. First of all, I will discuss about the specific cultural environment where the magazine is founded, and I will continue with the market circumstances, followed with public consumption psychology, which make it understood by public about its thoughts and style.Since its birth, "Modern Movies" is nurtured in the spirit of independence, open-minds and consistence, it is the all-inclusive qualities which modern movie enjoys that make it still have the sheer cultural charm after many years and offer many ideas and concepts the journals n ow can learn.It translates the theory of world cinema and focuses on the trend of foreign films, whic h reflects the spirit of enlightenment and a desire to innovate. The selection of feature film pictures e xpresses the editors’pursuit of the readability and appreciation of the magazine. It also reveals the changes in people’s lifestyle by setting advertising images that represents the prosperity of Shanghai in the 1930s.Finally, I will discuss about the enlightenment from two aspects, ranging from audience position and specialized contents in the magazine. It is of great help to re-inspect and understand The Modern Screen and it is also beneficial to the articles about "the softness film" among them. And finding out the mystery of history as well as discussing the academic and history value are also of great advantage. In this way, they can not only enrich the database of film history, but be greatly beneficial...
