This thesis is a comparative semantic study on the cognate words in Bao’an and Mongolian languages, in which an in-depth analysis is carried out on the cognate roots, derivational and compound words of the two languages. In the course, the thesis also explores the semantic differences of the cognate words in relation to the Middle Mongolian.Six sections constitute the thesis, namely, the introduction, three chap-ters for the main body, the conclusion, and the references. The introduction gives a brief account of Bao’an ethnic minority, their lan-guage, the speaker of Bao’an language, as well as a review of academic litera-tures and surveys regarding Bao’an language. An introduction on the cognate words in both languages and the purpose and methodology for the present re-search are also to be found in this section. The first chapter deals with cognate roots in the two languages from the perspective of three categories. In other words, semantically identical cognate roots, semantically similar cognate roots, and semantically different cognate roots.Chapter two deals with cognate derivational and compound words in Bao’an and Mongolian languages, also from the three aspects, namely, semantically i-dentical derivational and compound words, semantically similar derivational and compound words, and semantically different derivational and compound words. In the meantime, this chapter examines the differences between the cognate words of the two languages in the sense whether the cognate words in each language come together to form compound words in their respective lan-guages. A brief explanation on the semantic differences of the participles is also to be found in this part of the thesis. In the third chapter, the author carries out a comparative study on the differences between the cognate words or their meanings in Contemporary Bao’ an and Mongolian languages, regarding the causes and origins of these differ-ences, in relation to the development and evolution of Middle Mongolian.
