This research tends to explore whether the Picture Exchange Communication System(PECS) is of efficacy and effectiveness when applying to improve the communication ability of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Participants are three boys with ASD, who are at the age of 32-37 months. Parents’ interviews and nonstandard questionnaire Childhood Autism Fundamental Communicative Behaviors Rating Scale were used to make an assessment of their baseline levels of communication skills before the conduction of PECS. At the end of the research, the data collected were analyzed and parents’ interviews were also conducted. Data coding was used to collect the data and then were analyzed with software Excel 2003.The intervention study began at the end of August and was completed at the end of December, 2014, 18 weeks in total, three times one week and 50 minutes per session. At the end of the research, one child has reached the level of Stage 3A, one has reached the level Stage 3B and the third boy has begun the practice of Stage 4.The conclusions are listed as follows:(1)PECS has been proved effective to the development of the communicative ability of children with autism. The children are able to learn to use pictures to communicate with people alternatively by 4 months intervention. Therefore, PECS can be further generalized to the rehabilitation centers in China;(2)The 4 steps error correction procedure of PECS shows no significant effectiveness to discriminate among different pictures. The practice of discrimination depends on the cognitive ability of children with autism. Further explorations are needed to improve the cognitive ability of children with autism.
