Paul Thomas Anderson(June 26, 1970-) was a film director born in San Fernando Valley of the United States. He written, directed and produced the film "Boogie Nights" which has achieved instant fame in 1997.And the film had won the seventieth Oscar prize for the best screenplay Award nomination. Also, the movie "Magnolia"which was written, directed and produced by Paul Thomas Anderson, had won the Berlin Film Festival’s Golden Bear award in 1999. Disappeared for five years later,Paul returned with his latest film "there will be blood”. This brilliant masterpiece had achieved quite abundant in major awards. What’s more, it brings the "Modern Kubrick" title for Paul. Paul has always insisted on Independent film creation field and its unique personal style and thoughts are widely and profoundly embodied.As a new young director of the Author movie and Independent film, each of Paul’s works have a strong personal style and unique temperament of the times. Through the interpretation of Paul’s film works to analyze the film’s intrinsic implication, aesthetic features and image style, to exploring life theme and the profound temperament, to understand his films from the height of overall, seeking to distinguish it from the Hollywood studios film creation mode, and to study the unique humanities concern and profound philosophical character in the field of Independent film.This paper consists of four chapters, the first chapter is the introduction part, and mainly about the director Paul Thomas Anderson growing up and shooting experience,and this research background is helpful for us to understand those individual labels in Paul’s creation. The second chapter focuses on the inner meaning of Paul’s image,mainly to show the strongly author film label, and the philosophy meaning of the European art film. The third chapter and the fourth chapter are from the perspective of aesthetic characteristics and image style of Paul’s film to explain what unique of his films in the independent film field.
