American independent films have experienced rapid development since1990s.A large number of young and gifted directors entered into the vast stage of worldmovies. This paper focused on the American independent film director WesAnderson who began his career just during this period. From his debut ‘BottleRocket’ short (1994) to his latest film ‘Moonrise Kingdom’(2012), Wes Andersondirected three short films and seven feature films. These films are approved byvarious movie awards; moreover, they also have considerable commercial value.The creation mode of Wes Anderson’s films is largely featured by manycontemporaneous independent film directors. However, he is different from otherdirectors for his rich personality which is reflected in his works. This paper mainlydiscussed these two aspects.From the perspective of creation mode, the paper analyzed main features of thedevelopment of American independent films and specified that the mode of WesAnderson is to highly combine his independent spirit and the mature Hollywoodcommercial system. The developing routine of independent film is very similar to thegrowing routine of Hollywood studio system. However, independent films neverachieved genuine success until early1990s. Nearly the same period, Hollywood’scommercial value took over the development of independent films which can serveas a fundamental shift hit on the distribution of independent films. Under theirresistible trend, directors such as Wes Anderson found a mixed style of creationmode. They insist their independent nature in film languages, genre-innovations andsubjects. Meanwhile, they also obtain ample resources of film production anddistribution from Hollywood system.The paper also researched Anderson’s works’ strong personality. The paperfinally argue that Anderson’s films have a defined style after analyzing film narrative,theme, figures-shaping, and audio-visual art. Briefly, his films both follow classicHollywood narrative structures and also developed non-traditional way of it, which ispersonalized and subtle. In theme and figures-shaping aspect, Anderson showed his interests in growth theme. The figures-shaping is usually forged through telling thestories of growth profoundly. For audio-visual art, the colors and the soundtracks, thestars and the performance-modes, the setting-designs and the shots are all labeledby his unusual and recognizable style.Numerous talented independent directors appeared constantly during past twodecades.
