Recently, the research on linguistics has gone into a mature phase and China has introduced some original western linguistic works, some of which have been translated into Chinese. The Contrastive Analysis, written by James and published in 1980, is an important theoretical work that plays a great role in the research and development of contrastive linguistics. The author translated the fifth chapter that explores the questions existing in the areas of text and discourse in Macrolinguistics. The key points and difficulties lie in the translation of linguistic terms and the understanding of linguistic theories. The translation of this chapter has great research value. First, it will provide certain guidance to discourse cohesion and the realizat ion of discourse functions and at the same time can be of great theoretical significance to the study of linguistic theories and the comparison and research on Chinese and foreign languages. Second, as to the practical significance, the translation and study of this chapter serve as guiding functions to curriculum design, textbook compilation, classroom teaching, foreign language testing and so on. This report analyzes carefully the original and translated text from three aspects: the translation of vocabulary, attributive clause and inserted element, thus proposing some methods for linguistic translation.
