Conventional implicature is a subdivision of implicature proposed by Grice, the meaning of which is caused by conventional trigger which people can understand just by intuition. In previous studies, the discussions related to conventional implicature mostly focused on a theoretical level, such as its existence, background, properties etc. Few papers centered on an integrated study that combined conventional implicature with cognitive linguistics, let alone studied conventional implicature with the help of English material. Therefore, this paper aims at: firstly, studying conventional implicature from a cognitive prospect by using prototype theory and schema theory; secondly, focusing on three types of conventional trigger-preposition, conjunction and adverb, and drawing the corresponding theoretical framework; thirdly, testing and verifying the formed theoretical framework in the British series Sherlock. With the three above innovative ideas, this paper will try to deal with conventional trigger in a cognitive way and prove the necessity of conventional implicature in reality.
