| The annual Government Work Report is an official document published by the government of the People’s Republic of China. It not only displays the politics,economy, culture and other aspects of China, but is also an important means of foreign propaganda and negotiation. Moreover, 2014 is the first year of a comprehensive reform and a critical year for the “Twelfth Five Year Plan”. The author will focus on applying the Appraisal Theory to analyze the GWR with an emphasis on the positive significance of the Government Work Report.The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first part is literature review and will introduce previously done studies of appraisal theory, positive discourse analysis and GWR at home and abroad. The second part is theoretical framework which will introduce the appraisal theory and positive discourse analysis as the theoretical basis for the paper. The third chapter is the analysis which utilizes attitude, engagement and graduation in studying GWR. The conclusions made from the analysis are: firstly,among all the systems, the attitude system is the most prevalent in the GWR. The use of judgment was also found to be much higher than affect and appreciation within the attitude system. This shows that our government uses positive action to inspire people and promote social development. Secondly, in the GWR, under the engagement,dialogistic expansion is greater than dialogistic contraction. This usage reflects the inclusiveness and objectivity in the GWR. Thirdly, graduation runs through the GWR.It is used this way to reinforce the positive meaning of the discourse by force and focus, so as to achieve the purpose of persuading others.All in all, the author applied the Appraisal Theory to analyze the GWR on positive discourse analysis, not only can dig out the positive significance of the interior of the discourse, point out how the GWR is to motivate people and promote the nation development, but also can provide theoretical framework for English translation. |
