Foreign researches show that, the self-focused attention can be divided into two parts: ruminative self-focused attention and mindful self-focused attention, which had a significant negative correlation. Furthermore, the former goes against our mental health, and the latter can promote the development of positive psychological impact. In other words, the arousal of mindful self-focused attention can help individuals to reduce the negative ruminative self-focused attention. However, we could not deny the fact that the high ruminative people may sometimes produce a state of mindfulness, and the low ruminative individuals could not submerge themselves in the world of mindfulness. This points out that the two parts are not a simple negative correlation, there may be other variables existed among them. Therefore, this article hopes to explore whether there are a third variables existed in and mediated the two kinds of self-focused attention. That is to say, if the regulated variable exists, then it also can help the individuals to transform self-focused attention from rumination to mindfulness. We have three researches in this paper. First of all, through the scale tests, we studied the relationship between the two kinds of self-focused attention among Chinese college students; secondly, using the method of experiment, the second study putted ruminative self-focused attention(high×low) and attention materials(problem solving related prosocial behaviors×induction of distraction) as independent variables, and mindfulness level as the dependent variable, to explore whether the social behavior could influence the mindfulness of high and low group of ruminative self-focused attention; thirdly, using statistical analysis, the third study verified the effect of meditation of prosocial behavior in the two kinds of self-focused attention. To sum up, starting from the different angle of view, our article proposed that prosocial behavior can help individuals to transform self-focused attention from ruminative to mindfulness. All in all, research on this subject belongs to the field of health and social psychology, which has important theoretical and practical significance. The hypotheses of this paper are:Hypothesis 1: For Chinese college students, ruminative self-focused attention and mindful self-focused attention have a significant negative correlation. Hypothesis 2: For high ruminative self-focused attention individuals, people who were activated to solve problems related to prosocial behaviors will enhance more mindfulness awareness than people who were activated by induction of distraction. Hypothesis 3: For low ruminative self-focused individuals, there were no significant differences between the two ways of activation. Hypothesis 4: Prosocial behaviors have meditation effect in the two kinds of self-focused attention. For the high dear social behavior of an individual, for high ruminative self-focused attention individuals, although the level of ruminative self-focused attention is high, they may be likely to experience mindfulness; on the contrary, for low ruminative self-focused individuals, ruminative self-focused attention and mindful self-focused attention have a significant negative correlation. The results show that:First, For Chinese college students, ruminative self-focused attention and mindful self-focused attention have a significant negative correlation.Second, Two independent variables could influence mindfulness awareness. Moreover, no matter high or low ruminative self-focused attention groups, people who were activated to solve problems related to prosocial behaviors will enhance more mindfulness awareness than people who were activated by induction of distraction. And the low group of people will obtain higher scores of mindfulness than the high group in any cases.Third, for high ruminative self-focused attention individuals, the level of mindfulness is relatively high. thus people who were activated to solve problems related to prosocial behaviors will enhance more mindfulness awareness than people who were activated by induction of distraction.Forth, for low ruminative self-focused individuals, individual mindfulness levels were at a higher level. Although the results of activation related to prosocial behaviors’ problems solving was higher than induction of distraction, the gap between the two is less than the high group.Fifth, Prosocial behaviors have meditation effect in the two kinds of self-focused attention.
