The rising of Tubo Dynasty and Dangxiang Qiang during the Tang and Song Dynasty, altered the political and military situation in Northwest China. The confrontation between Song and Tangut Dynasty had great impacts on the road patterns in Northwest China.To defend the Tangu Dynasty, the Song Dynasty stationed heavily in Shanxi district, and built many military forts along the boundary areas. Meanwhile, the Song Dynasty constantly altered the frontier defense system, established Fuyan, Huanqing, Jingyuan and Qinfeng districts to strengthen the communication of different districts. Based on the construction of the fortresses in the boundary areas, the road status was greatly improved in Shanxi district. The roads in Fuyan district was centered in Yanzhou, Fuzhou and Suidejun, and the roads in Huanqing district was centered in the Huanzhou and Qingzhou, while the roads in Jingyuan district was centered in Zhenrongjun, Yuanzhou and Weizhou, the roads in Qinlong district is centered in Qinzhou. The military defense, mutual assistance and logistic transport abilities were improved, which had a great impact on the Song Dynasty’s frontier tactics as well as the procedure of the war between Song Dynasty and Tangu.
