The present thesis for MTI degree is composed of two parts. Part one is a translation of an excerpt from Gweilo:A Memoir of a Hong Kong Childhood by English novelist Martin Booth. Part Two is a review and comment on the translation, mainly discussing forms of defamiliarization devices, the significance, feasibility and difficulty of representation of defamiliarization devices in the translation as well as the related translation skills.Defamiliarization is a kind of the artistic methods. In English literary works, defamiliarization devices mainly refer to deviations on phonetic, lexical, syntactic and textual levels, which can enhance the literariness of the works and aesthetic enjoyment of the readers. As a result, translators should attach equal importance to this artistic method in the source language text and apply various translation skills such as analogical translation, amplification, annotation and fuzzification of culture-loaded words to represent those defamiliarization devices in the translation works.
