Regular script, known as the model among the five classic scripts, is characterized by even and straight stroke. Regular script, which is free from both the arbitrariness of the cursive script and the waves of clerical script in the Han Dynasty official script, plays a significant role in maintaining the complete system of calligraphy and inheriting several maintaining the complete thousand years of Chinese civilization. It dated from the Eastern Han Dynasty, and matured in Wei and Jin Dynasties, especially the period feathered by Zhong Yao, Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi.Zhao Mengfu, a a significant calligrapher in the Yuan Dynasty,who is a rare person in the history of calligraphy who was not only skilled in painting, but also was proficient in five scripts ranging from Seal, Clerical, Regular, Semi-cursive to Cursive and he is also very excellent paintings.In this paper I will start from regular script in small characters which is infectious, gentle and vivid. The first stroke of a character tastes rigid and then becomes round and flexible which breed a ease end.His regular script in small characters origined from the Wei and Jin Dynasties, and got the essence from the Tang people which presents an outstanding calligrapher who walks into the history and then got away from it. He activated the artistic creation of regular script in small characters in the Yuan Dynasty, and this also launched a revivalist of the tide.Zhao Mengfu left many excellent works of art all his life, and we are especially familiar with his works of regular script in small characters.Here are five representative works: Sutra of Pure and Calm, The Regular Script in Small Characters of Gao Shang Da Dong Yu Jing,The Tao-te Ching,Lo River Map,Ji An Biography, and this paper takes the former four works as the study object and then analyze and summarize it from different stages of the whole art experience. And then we saw his revivalist view, as well as the constant scrutiny of his calligraphy learning. He first emulated from works of Wei Jin dynasties, imitated Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, and then further standardized Tang rules along the ancient law.He achieved continuous progress from ancient calligraphy, which laid solid foundation for his own calligraphy art features. If we view from the history of the Regular Script in Small Characters,both the artistic value and features of his art are worth learning.
