There are about 15,000 Han Dynasty Stone Reliefs in China with the Southwest region of Shandong being the major producing area of this kind of Stone Reliefs. In recent years, more and more Han Dynasty tombs have been discovered with Han Dynasty Stone Reliefs being unearthed, thus, more and more information about the announcement topic and prefatory remarks are available. At the meantime, other experts also strive to look for information from the stone reliefs of Han dynasty. The inscriptions and preface of the stone reliefs of Han dynasty serve as the most tenable scientific data with respect to the research on stone reliefs of Han dynasty. Among all the existing calligraphy works, there is no specific book offer in-depth study of the inscriptions and preface of the stone reliefs of Han dynasty. The analysis of the calligraphy works, the development of calligraphy is indispensable from the time-honored cultural history in China. It is this particular artistic expression that contributes to the unique feature of Chinese calligraphy. In the Southwest region of Shandong, there is a dense distribution of Han Dynasty Stone Reliefs which cover a wide range of subjects. In fact, the promotion and development of Han Dynasty Stone Reliefs is based on a profound historical background and this all-embracing and sophisticated Han Dynasty Stone Reliefs have displayed unprecedented artistic achievements. Without a good understanding of it, it is impossible to gain an insight into the quintessence, vitality and enormous artistic values of calligraphy of Han dynasty.The mural inscriptions and preface on stone reliefs of Han dynasty in southwest Shandong province epitomize the specific cultural forms of a time. The mural inscriptions and preface in this region, as the distinctive and featured chirography of the official script of Han dynasty, are of great values. People have gained a deep understanding of the official script of Han dynasty inscribed on the stone tablet. However, the mural inscriptions and preface on the stone reliefs of Han dynasty have greatly enriched the content of official script, refreshing people with its very pretty and charming handwriting. At the meantime, it also develops a new realm in calligraphy, layout and standard style of handwriting and displays a sense of casualness compared with the previous solemn inscriptions. If the inscriptions of Han dynasty were compared as the refined and courteous gentleman standing before the elderly, then the mural inscriptions and preface on the stone reliefs is the energetic and vigorous young man without scruple, thus testifying greater aesthetic qualities.The mural inscriptions and preface on stone reliefs of Han dynasty were from the calligraphers with unknown names, who constantly refined their skills through repeated practice and gradually accumulated inexhaustible wisdom. Their attainments in calligraphy could be matched with the noted calligraphers of their contemporary times with their character engraving proficiency reaching unprecedented height. The most famous Stele of Wu Rong and Stele of Wu Ban came from the same tomb with the stone reliefs. The stone reliefs as well as the inscriptions and preface on it jointly create a harmonious and unified aesthetic appreciation, embodying the perfect integration of form, spirit and connotation and being heralded as a stone carving art ingenuity. It serves as the quintessence of the traditional Chinese calligraphy to express lines by knives rather than writing brushes.In this paper, the author first made a brief overview of the researches on the announcement topic and prefatory remarks of Han Dynasty Reliefs in the Southwest region of Shandong, then he/she made some classifications based on the types and content of the Han Dynasty Reliefs. Finally, the author decided to study the announcement topic and prefatory remarks of Han Dynasty Reliefs in the Southwest region of Shandong in the present research. From the perspective of epigraphy, the author tries to make a systematic study of the announcement topic and prefatory remarks of Han Dynasty Reliefs, then a comparative study would also be made to compare Han Dynasty Reliefs with Han tablet inscriptions in the Southwest region of Shandong, Han Dynasty Reliefs in the surrounding areas and Han silk book. Through this study, the author tries to find out the unique artistic aesthetics of the announcement topic and prefatory remarks of Han Dynasty Reliefs in the Southwest region of Shandong and figure out the relationship between the present research topic and Chinese calligraphy. It is hoped that the artistic literature and social value of the announcement topic and prefatory remarks of Han Dynasty Reliefs in the Southwest region of Shandong could be uncovered.
