In the context of Chinese International, the domestic international schools that belong to international baccalaureate organization are required to offer Mandarin lessons as a second language. With the growing demands on Mandarin teaching, Middle School’s(11-16) second language teaching outline made specific development goals and evaluative criterion for each stage of development regarding listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students from beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of development are having difficulties in reaching reading and writing goals. Under the above background and based on the classroom teaching practice, this thesis introduces teaching design research with the integration of reading and writing. For a long time, students have been suffering in a single item of boring teaching mode. The reading and writing teaching efficiency is low. Students are stagnant and weariness of reading and writing. This research is striving to help changing this current situation.This thesis is aimed at the specificity of teaching Mandarin as foreign language in international schools than the traditional sense. According to the development goals and assessment criterion of the language B syllabus in international school, as well as the problems of teaching reading and writing separately, based on the existed research results, the ideas of integrated teaching method has been proposed. This study gathered information and collected data through teaching design, process of teaching and test results. It analyzed the the experimental results qualitatively and quantitatively, and also combined with the teaching samples of teaching integration reading and writing through different levels, then explored for further teaching program design. It summarized the graded integration model of teaching reading and writing, and the characteristics of integrity, autonomy and development. The study proved that the integrated teaching is better than separated teaching reading and writing with examples and data, it can effectively improve foreign students’reading and writing skills. This integration model of teaching reading and writing provides students with more opportunities for independent learning and exploration, to help students learn how to learn. It can reduce the difficulties of reading and writing, to help students alleviate and eliminate the resentment in reading and writing, to find a breakthrough in reading comprehension and writing. Furthermore, the teaching of integration reading and writing is also benefit for teachers to promote the creation of a more systematic and rational arrangement of teaching materials, to design more effective writing assignments. Thereby it promotes teachers to design the test which reflects both "teaching" and "learning" results.This study investigated how to break through the difficulties, to design reasonable and effective teaching plan in international classroom teaching Mandarin as a second language. It combined reading and writing, and led students to understand author’s writing intention while inquiring the reading materials. In the process of responding to the views expressed by the author, this thesis tried to tease out referable expression methods, applying the writing skills provided by reading materials and closely combing personal experiences in writing practice, to improve teaching Mandarin as a second language in international schools by providing references and suggestions creatively.
