A Pedigree Analysis Of Power And War Discourse

With the interpretation of “Society Must Be Defended”, this paper discusses Foucault’smethod of the genealogy and tries to introduce the genealogy to legal methodology. In orderto learn the principle of genealogy, we analyze the strategy and the logic of genealogy bystudying the case of the genealogical analysis of history-political discourse in this article.Therefore the paper discusses Foucault’s method of power analysis. The history-politicaldiscourse, as a tool of power analysis, sets the scope and conditions of the principles of warapplied to power analysis. Foucault’s genealogy is composed of strength analysis of power,structural analysis and historical analysis. And strength analysis of power must be finished inthe genealogical history. So this paper discusses the method of power analysis which isseparated from the genealogy methodology firstly, and then discusses the genealogymethodology as a whole, which contains the method of power analysis.This paper consists of four parts. The first chapter briefly discusses the three basicconcepts of Foucault’s thought: enlightenment, knowledge and truth. In Foucault’s ideology,the enlightenment determines the theory of knowledge, and the theory of knowledgedetermines the view of truth. The three basic concepts constitute the framework of poweranalysis. Undoubtedly, to have a deep understanding of these three concepts is a prerequisitefor interpretation of “Society Must Be Defended”. The second chapter discusses Foucault’smethod of power analysis. Based on the logic of war which contains three levels: strategy,tactics, weapons, we comb the logic and strategies of the method of power analysis from threeaspects: the direction of analysis, methods on prevention and the tool of analysis. The thirdchapter discusses the genealogical struggle of history-political discourse from twoperspectives. On one hand, this paper describes the structure and the content of history-political discourse, which sets the scope and conditions of the principles of war applied topower analysis. On the other hand, by analyzing the case of genealogical analysis of history-political discourse, we attempt to present logic and strategy of the genealogical methodscompletely. The final chapter summarizes the genealogy methodology in “Society Must BeDefended”, and tries to introduce the genealogy to legal methodology. Foucault’s genealogycontains three methods of which are structural analysis, strength analysis and historicalanalysis. They promote innovations of methods of legal research.
