Growth, as an important stage and experience of human beings, is bound to become theresearch topic of literature, especially the novel. Growth is a period full of pain and joy, then therelated Bildungsroman is of great charm. With years of prosperous development, the study on theBildungsroman is increasingly becoming a hot topic. As the first one in China who proposed theconcept of “growth literature” and “Bildungsroman”, Cao Wenxuan’s writing and philosophy hasalways been at the forefront of the times, and plays a significant role in the development ofChinese growing literature. Therefore, referring to the novel about growth, the workings of CaoWenxuan is a must and can never be neglected.Growth is a topic that everyone can’t avoid, especially the adolescents, who are turning intothe real society from the fairy world. And the questions such as how to coordinate themselveswith society,how to be an independent man really annoy them very much. However, it is CaoWenxuan’s Bildungsroman that can guide them to be involved in the society with its uniquecontent and special means. He believes that literature plays a crucial educational role, and“children’s literature writer is the future character shapers of the whole nation”. In CaoWenxuan’s Bildungsroman, we can see that he pays much attention to the growth of children aswell as the culturing of their physical and mental health, and he encourage the children to pursuetheir dreams, keep moving and meanwhile he also appeals to them to have the courage to facethe challenge of the sufferings, in this way, they can see the whole world clearly, and these workscan help them better adapt to society healthily.For instance, Root Bird, the guidelines forteenagers pursue their dreams and, Bronze Sunflower for presenting hardships and Grass Housefor indicating being touched, and so on. In Cao Wenxuan works, on one hand, we can both feelthe quality of kindness, simplicity and compassion, on the other hand, the cruel society is beingpresented for children.Apart from giving the right attitude in the works, Cao Wenxuan good at expressing his ownthoughts with the help of the classical aesthetic artistic way. The enlightenment and educationalfiction of Cao Wenxuan contributes to the healthy growth of young people. Therefore, study onhis Bildungsroman is highly full of aesthetic value and practical significance.Combining the works of Cao Wenxuan and creative ideas and partial knowledge of psychology,this paper attempts to explore uniqueness of Bildungsroman and analyze the valueand significance of this exploration generated.This paper is divided into five parts to discuss Cao Wenxuan’s Bildungsroman.The introduction describes the development of “Bildungsroman”, and summarizes theconnotation of it. Then carding the current academic research interests of Cao Wenxuan’s workssimply and pointing out my innovation.The first chapter discusses spiritual growth connotation in Cao Wenxuan’s works. Theresearch will be started from the perspectives of “value of life sublimation in misery”,“shapingthe future of the national character”,“establishing self-consciousness”.The second chapter will be presented from the perspective of narrative expression,extracting the uniqueness of Cao Wenxuan’s growth novels. And this part will get explored fromthe perspective of Wenxuan’s narrative mode, the mysterious atmosphere of rendering imageryanalysis and meaningful to show three aspects.The third chapter discusses the thought about “growth” of Cao Wenxuan himself, analyzingthe reason why the characters’ growth is so unique. This part is about the author’s own growthexperience, growth philosophy, thoughts and his unique poetic beautiful mode of expression.The last part summarizes Cao Wenxuan’s exploring in growth and its significance of thenovel.
