In a broad sense, the new media arts is based on optical and electronic medium. In digitalperiod, according to the computerized technology, the network platform, the virtualenvironment and biotechnology, the key element of the new media arts is the application andthe corresponding forms of expression of the latest technologies in an artistic work. This field israpidly developing and of various changes, which represents the trend of experiment acrossmedium and subjects, which has provides the field of art with new energy and is undoubtedlythe most representative art category at present. The relation between “Body” and “Arts” is always a hot topic. Body as a kind of narrativemethod of art is ubiquitous. Before the words were invented, narration by body is the only wayto communicate, especially in the primal murals, dancing, plays and totem works. With thedevelopment of words and printing, language has gradually become the main sign of narration.Since Ancient Greek to the rational era, body has been defined as the opposition with sprite andsoul in the rational culture represented by language, and become the machine and equipmentcontrolled by reason. Until the19thcentury, Nietzsche subverted the mind-body dualism withthe help of life aesthetics which is mainly based on the sensibility and body in order to recoverthe validity of instinct, desire and feelings. With the development of the science technology andthe revolt of the contemporary mind in the20thcentury, the dualism of reason and body hascompletely lost the former significance in the world of “Bit” and “Metazoa”. People in theperiod of information are devoted into overthrowing the dualism pattern, surpass the prime limitof the body and disagree with the opinion of using the narrow coding to explain the possibilityof the body existence.Body is the most pioneering field in the new media arts. Body has become the bestmedium to express the extreme individualism. The new media arts has made the perception andsense entirely broadened, explored the new appearance method of body, identity, sex, self andso on and filled the development of arts with new vitality and energy. As the medium, body andthe new media technology have surpassed the natural property and presents extremelycomplicated values and technology patterns. The science technology is the basis of theexistence of the new media arts. What’s more, the science technology is on behalf of sense andpracticality. The overall technology gives the discipline to body in a more secret way. Naturally the new media arts is also the result of the rational development of equipment. Narration bybody means that sense and sensation are improved and the body desire and the natural life arepraised by the free and sensitive atmosphere, which is the rational negation and criticism to theequipment. Therefore, practically, narration by body in the new media arts is not equal to thefact that people should put arts into the practice of technology and use the technology toreinvent arts but people should fuse the sense with sensibility, spirit with body, human withmachine, virtual with reality. The non-linear narrative characteristics of the new media artspromotes the non-linear body, where the body is fluid, blurred, indefinite, multiple andunlimited. This essay includes three parts. The first chapter, New Media and New Media Arts, notonly provides a summary of the concepts and main characteristics of them but also brieflyintroduces the development course of new media arts. The second chapter, Narration by Body, gives a literature review of the historic development of the concept of “Body”, and defines“Narration by Body” and summarizes the characteristics of Narration by Body in new mediaarts.
