| Yum-bu-bLa-sGang palace possesses a very important cultural meaning as it is an ancient architecture, therefore, in the history of Tibetan Palace architecture, it has a long history with an essential position. Throughout the historical changes, now Yum-bu-bLa-sGang is not only a political institute of laymen, but it symbolizes the occurrence of Tibetan palace architecture with creativity as well. Thus, the palace itself is a crucial cultural meaning of ancient architecture.Tibetan historical sources revealed much of Yum-bu-bLa-sGang as the first palace, but since the most historical documentations were written after the Second Development Period of Tibetan Buddhism, much information is related to its religious figures rather than the history of Tibetan bTsan-pos (Kings), thenceforth, Yum-bu-bLa-sGang is seen as a Tibetan Buddhist holy site rather than an origination for the lineage of Tibetan bTsan-pos. The historical Yum-bu-bLa-sGang, established with its politics and economy as the main purpose, is the first ever palace of the ancestors of Tibetan bTsan-po lineages and it was the center for the politics sphere of the bTsan-pos. Furthermore, it represents the beginning of the political structure of Tibetan bTsan-po Lineages, expansion of territory, increase in the number of tenants, economic development, cultural enhancement and so forth important spheres are also being represented。Some previous functions and outstanding meanings of the Palace have been demising as a result of the changes in history and modern social impact. This thesis making efforts to analyze and refine the Tibetan and Chinese old documents with a combination of researcher’s fieldwork notes to interpret the historical relics and cultural transitions of Yum-bu-bLa-sGang Palace. The thesis gives a detailed description about the position and function of Yum-bu-bLa-sGang palace to how the modern society and faithful believers of it make sense of the palace under the impact of modern market economy and the social phenomenon of today’s worldly-oriented religion。 The reason for selection of this title, its meaning, current state of related studies and about the new research methodology are discussed in the foreword of the thesis. In Chapter One, other than a discussion on the features of Yar-kLung valley with its vicinity geography and climate, using the angle of text-study to analyze a changing image of King gNya-khri-bTsan-po in the texts of different historical periods and the different stories of the King’s generation to summarize distinctive thoughts on the King’s generation in terms of the reasons of historiography. Moreover, as for the King’s enthronement, under the respect and plan from the Twelve Scholars of Bon, the King was enthroned. From then on, the system of Tibetan King’s first ever lineage began.In Chapter Two, by way of synthesizing Tibetan historical texts, old documents and Chinese sources, analyzes the historical reasons for the establishment of Yum-bu-bLha-sGang. From ancient to some changes and a brief history of Yum-bu-bLa-sGang during the Yuan and Ming Dynasty are discussed as well. Especially writing of why Yum-bu-bLa-sGang was shifted into a Buddhist temple from a laymen’s palace to address the historical reason and necessity for forming the palace’s changes.In Chapter Three, discusses about the current situation of Yum-bu-bLa-sGang. First, its today’s architecture and content are introduced; Then a detailed discussion on the palace’s economic situation with the impact from modern market economy forming the palace’s new model of economic state is given, yet the income sources and livelihood strategies of its monks, the religious main activities of today’s Yum-bu-bLa-sGang, and its current social position as well as benefits are also introduced.In the ending, it summarizes the history, development, current social function and position of Yum-bu-bLa-sGang Palace. |
