Theory of Static Drama was put forward by Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck in his article the Tragic of Daily Life wrote at the end of 19 th century. He emphasized that not only the drama should reflect the daily life, but reflect the things besides daily life. Therefore, the drama should pay more attention to reflect the beauty of ordinary daily life. There are few significant events occur in daily life. Static is the essence of life. Therefore, the psychological activity is loftier than body activity. The activity of drama is not elaborate all stateliness and beauty.but language will, however, dialogue unable to achieve also.they needs reflect with interior words. His works including The Guest, Interior, Mana princess has static features:pay attention to exaggerating atmosphere.character and conflict are not obvious.the plot is not advance.weakening stage action.the language pour out to repeat without logic. The character ’statics’ is perfectly reflected through Maeterlinck’s drama and as well well-developed by Beckett since then.It is a transition from Maeterlinck’s exaggerated atmosphere, concentrated internal motion and confronted death ending to Beckett’s undefined, extensively minified "prescriptive situation" and a inexplicit end.It breaks the traditional rules of focusing on the external action, but emphasizing the expression of human’s inner side.In order to present the state of human being’s reality, a brand new type of article methods, which broadens the contemporary artistic vision is attainted. This article extracts the main points of Maeterlinck’s "static drama" as well as analyzes and concludes the similarity of his drama with those of Beckett’s.It also summarizes from Maeterlinck’s proposal to Beckett’s improvement of the drama theory.Through comparison,it analyses the process of the changing of static drama, along with the reason and intention of the author ’s adopting this ploy to pursue aesthetics. It is hoped to set the ball rolling for the future studies.
