In recent years, the upsurge of Chinese learning is in the expansion, and the teaching materials are abounding. With the increase of textbooks, the research on these has increased. According to the teaching materials research, we found that the illustrations gradually into researchers’vision, and its effect is emerging. As the essential part in the textbooks, the illustrations are not only decorations, but also the tools of learning. So it is necessary for us to do the research on illustrations of textbooks.The paper is divided into four parts. The first part is the introduction,introduces the definition of illustration, the former research, the object, significance of the topic and method. The first part is the function of illustration and the classification on the illustration of textbooks. The author analyzes the function of illustration in psychological terms, pedagogical terms and textbook compiling principles. Meanwhile, the textbooks are classified according to style, form and effect. The second part is the comparative analysis on quantity and components of four sets of textbooks. The four sets of textbooks are 《New Practical Chinese Reader Textbook》, 《Chinese Teaching》,《10 level Chinese Intergrated Textbook》,《Speed —up Chinese》.The research analyzes the quantity of illustration of textbooks in sets, parts and sorted and analyzes the components in relativity between words and pictures. Then, the author includes the features of illustration about these four sets of textbooks. The third part analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of four sets of textbooks and puts forward personal suggestions. The problems are that:(1)illegible illustration;(2)illegible meaning;(3 prehistoric illustration;(4)graceless content of illustration. There are also many problems in role:(1)improper location;(2)loose correlation between illustration and content;(3)irrelevance between illustration and content;(4)improper quantity. At last, the author puts forward own suggestions. In terms of typography, the author points out the suggestions about illustration on content, new words, notes, exercises, phonology, character and culture. In form of illustration, the author puts forward three suggestion:(1)the illustration should be advanced, clear and elegant; (2)photography should be clear;(3 illustration should be manifold. In terms of quality, the author points out that the fancy illustration should be at down, and the explanatory parts and the training parts should be added.Based on the analysis of four textbooks, the author learns more about the present illustration, including advantages and disadvantages. All in all, the author wants to put forward the suggestions that will be available of further research.
