In the background of globalization and the realistic context of cultural development,along with more and more focus and theoretical discussion about Academy Awards fromdomestic academia, the depth and range of relative research are increasingly expanding.Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, closely related to the policy of“goingout” in Chinese films, increasingly attracts scholars and becomes an object of academicresearch.Nowadays the theoretical works, journals and theses about Academy Award for BestForeign Language Films written by domestic scholars are relatively small in number andsingle in perspectives. Most of them are lack of overall grasp of macro level, specificity andintensity, therefore little opinions with uniqueness, novelty and construction appear.Moreover, no benign interaction with the practice exploration for Oscar which is made bydomestic films forms. Therefore, it is significant to make an overall, systematic andintensive study on Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Films. It can not onlycontribute to the benign interaction with domestic films’ past practice, it can also reviewthe history, current situation and future development of domestic films from more concreteperspectives.The research on the best foreign language films should takes the overall graspin macro levels and questions and deficiency into account, and the author will try to explorethe corresponding solutions and strategies.This thesis is divided into six parts. In the Introduction, introduces the question. Thehistory of Chinese film contending Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Films andthe current situation of research on best foreign language films are discussed, thus it presentsthe realistic meaning and theoretical values of best foreign language films. Chapter Oneelaborates the yield, development, historical status and realistic meanings of AcademyAward for Best Foreign Language Films. Their yield is not only the result of Americanfilms’ continuous expanding, but also the active measures taken under the developmentaltrend of international films. In the20th century, American films’ expansion contributed tothe yield of Best Foreign Language Films. After the World War II, the measures taken byAmerican films under the pressure of internal films’ development promoted the yield ofBest Foreign Language Films. These two factors affected mutually, thus boost theemergence of Best Foreign Language Films. In this thesis, the historical developments of Best Foreign Language Films in different periods are integrated to be discussed, and it isdivided into five stages of historical evolution. The features of different developmentalstages of Best Foreign Language Films are summarized, besides, the rules of their historicaldevelopment are clearly reflected.The author thinks the historical development of BestForeign Language Films reflects the close relationship with international films’developmental trend. The best foreign language films are almost the representatives ofinternational films in different periods, and they represent the achievements films indifferent countries or areas made.On this basis, the significant historical status and realisticmeanings of Best Foreign Language Films in the internationalized development of Americanfilms.Chapter Two is about the research of the winning works of Best Foreign LanguageFilms. Combining the domestic research on the current research state of winning works andtheir individual features, the author classified the past winning works for Best ForeignLanguage Films into3types: ethics films, war films and politics films. Chapter Three is onthe research of award selection from the respects of the award system, award selectioncriteria and the influential factors. This part is on the basis of award system, centered theexplanation of award selection criteria and taking factors influencing award section intoaccount. The evaluation criteria of the Best Foreign Language Film in this essay are mainlyrepresented in four aspects as followings:Focusing on the social reality, manifesting the lifeof common people, reflecting the common emotions of human, profoundly revealing andcriticize the social problems and meanwhile thoroughly reflecting humanity.Centering on thelife of common people, integrating grand narratives of history and nations into the narrativeof common people’s life, possessing the spirit of reflection and human concern.Withartistic presentation and image expression of the specific national culture and spirit,describing and manifesting the age style, social development and mentality of the specificnations.Possessing creativity, leading the tendency of film creation and being able torepresent the film achievement of some country or area. Chapter Four mainly discusses therealistic inspirations from the research on Academy Best Foreign Language Films. The aimsof this research ultimately influence the practice made by Chinese films contendingAcademy Best Foreign Language Films, therefore, reexamining and reflecting the domesticefforts on running for Best Foreign Language Films must bring some realistic inspirations.The conclusion part generalizes the writing ideas and research focus of this research.
