Uygur Partial Nominal Phrase Types

Word order is the sequence of each language unit in a language combination. For example, it indicates the order of morpheme, word, phrase, simple sentence, subordinate clause and main clause, sentences group and so forth. Grammatical relations, the meanings and the effect of expressions will be differentiating if the word order is different. Therefore, word order is of great importance in any language. If the word order of an any given language is thoroughly studied, it will not only play a positive effect in understanding the syntax structure, semantic structure of a language, but also on updating grammatical concepts and methods of grammatical study. This paper mainly studies the word order of modifier-noun phrases in Uyhgur, and this topic will be presented analyctically in altogether four chapters.In first chapter, the importance and significance of choosing the topic are explained, as well as research methos concerning this topic.In second chapter, the beginning and the development process of word order typology are briefly discussed. In addition, achievements made on this discipline from both home and abroad are recounted, and especially highlited are the achievements made on the word order typology of Uyghur.Third chapter is the main body of this paper, in which the word order of modifier-noun phrases in Uyhgur are studied and analyzed in great detail. NP (Noun Phrase) is a kind of phrase that has a noun as the head word. According to the sytax relationships between the units of a noun phrase, noun phrases in Uyghur are classified into two categories:modifier-noun phrases and coordinating-noun phrases. Modifier-noun phrases are phrases consisting of two or more words, and words which play roles such as modifying, restricting and depictiong are prepostioned, while the head words are postpostioned. According to this, this paper mainly analyzed the possible word order of language units that can form modifier-noun phrases, such as noun and noun, adjective and noun, pronoun and noun, numeral and noun, classifier and noun, case phrases and noun, onomatopoeia and noun, pospositional phrase and noun.Fourth chapter is the conclusion of the previous chapter, which is that within modifier-noun phrases, units which play roles such as modifying, restricting and depictiong are prepostioned, while the head words are postpostioned. That is to say the word orders of possible modifier-noun phrases in Uyghur are N+N, Adj+N, Pron+N, Num+N, CL+N, G+N, KP+N, Ono+N, postpositonal phrase+N. However, within postpositonal phrases, postpositions are the head nouns, thus the word order of postpositional phrases is N+POST (head).
