Chinese learning is followed as the essence while western learning as the practical application. This was the feature of culture in the period of Republic of China, and has been well demonstrated by its pragmatism art. The artists combined both the traditions of eastern culture and the advancements of western civilization. As an important cultural symbol, the art design was greatly impacted during the communications between the eastern and western history and culture.The first chapter of this thesis discusses the background of the New Culture Movement, and its impacts on the arts in the period of Republic of China. The second chapter describes the western pragmatism in the design of cloth, calendar, textiles, architectures etc during the period. Back to that time, western-style clothing was considered as the symbol of fashion and education and therefore been widely sought after. The third chapter focuses on difference on the designing between China and the Western. Western civilization showed fundamental impacts in almost every aspects of Republic of China including the art design. This was reflected by the handicrafts which represented the aesthetic standards of the population. The fourth chapter describes the significance of this principle in the evolution of national arts. Our national arts stem from the traditions of Chinese culture, which shows the directs and should be followed as the essence. Western style should be considered as supplemental elements. The improvement of our national arts has been benefiting from the merge of Chinese culture and western culture, and will develop more novel concepts in art.
