Realism has already had a long presence in the history of art. For example, its use forms a kind of a mirror impression, recording the current moment in contemporary society. In the 20 thcentury, Western Realism entered China and thus revealed the merging of Chinese-Western art history. Today although we may use photography to record our every move, however the presence of realism in art is still very much a force to be reckoned with. This thesis begins with a discussion of how the author first encountered realist painting. Further it discusses how to author brought this use of realism into his own ink painting. The choice of this topic thus represents the author’s effort to achieve new and distinguishing results in the area of contemporary Chinese art. Thus, this thesis discusses realist art, from antiquity to present, further discussing its use and practice in the art of contemporary masters. This thesis aims to prove the permanence and time honored power and charm of realism in art. The conclusion of this thesis is thus a discussion regarding the author’s personal experience and practice of realist art. The author believes that through the study of form and ink painting, these two areas, including the Western methods of modeling, may enrich possibilities in Chinese painting and realist art. From ink painting, one may take these greater formal possibilities, enriching expression, merging Chinese and Western ideas and thus create something new. Realist art, due to its elegant yet popular appreciation, therefore becomes an irreplaceable form of expression in art.
