In the traditional period of China’s rural society, during the Lunar New Year or temple fairs, farmers will be spontaneously organized for the unit with the village or community, to hold a large-scale campaign known as "Shehuo" (Festival Entertainment), which has various forms, rich content and a combined meaning of greeting the spring, worshiping the deity, driving out the plague and reveling. Southwest Shanxi is one of the main birthplaces of farming civilization in the Yellow River basin, which has a long agricultural history. Unique natural landscape and thousands of years of civilization breed the cultural form of Shehuo with regional characteristics. Shehuo, as the ancient folk custom, has become mature along with the prosperity of the Chinese agricultural civilization for thousands of years. Until now, Shehuo is still one of the indispensable forms of entertainment in the rural society of southwest Shanxi in the slack season. This article will take Shehuo of southwest Shanxi as an example, to grasp the essence of the relationship between the culture of Shehuo and social economy, and then to explore how to inherit and develop the traditional folk culture in the tide of commodity economy according to the analysis of the economic phenomenon in the process of Shehuo and the social culture of Shehuo during the course of economic changes. The results show that Shehuo is not a purely cultural phenomenon. It is connected with social economy and reflects the changes of social economy in its unique way.
