The concept "chunks" originated from psychology in the 1950s in the US, has received extensive attentions since introduced in the second language research. Chunk shows its important values and great potentials increasingly in language research and teaching, the advantages of the chunk approach is gradually recognized in language teaching. The current researches on chunks mainly focus on English as a second language in the domestic, for the study of Chinese chunk is still in the initial stage. It’s lack of extensive promotions and applications in practice, especially in listening class.Based on the research from Chinese and foreign scholars, this paper analyzes on the Chinese and "chunks", to explore how the lexical approach can be applied better in listening course for elementary learners, so as to bring about a new perspective for the teaching Chinese as a second language, and also provides a more effective teaching.This paper is composes by five chapters:The first chapter is the introduction part of the paper, focusing on the background of the thesis, the main content and the method. The second chapter introduces the development of the chunk approach from put forward to apply in second language field, the next is an overview of the chunk approach, introduces the basic principles by Lewis, and discusses the functions of the chunk approach respectively from the learners, language input and output. And we discuss the current situation of Chinese language teaching, on the basis of previous research; make the corresponding classification for the "Chinese chunk". The third chapter we analyze the listening course and the teaching objectives for elementary learners, also elaborate the basic practices in three stages of the preparation before class, in class, after class according to the main steps of teaching, and gives the corresponding examples based on the textbook. At the fourth chapter, it tries to figure out an effective case in TCSL with chunk approach based on the above theoretical exposition. The fifth chapter is the conclusion part, summarizes the paper, and gives suggestions and prospects for the future research.
