Ancient Rome was one of the most influential western cities, and its urban construction was one of the main achievements. The highly developed urban civilization associated with Rome political, economic and cultural. On the one hand, the urban construction in the Later Empire was a continuation of the pre-urban construction, therefore there were some similarities characteristics in the construction phase of the city; on the other hand, due to the specific historical environment in the Later Empire, the city construction also had distinctive features. The basic method used in this paper is the historical research method, under the background of the ancient Roman city history, based on the history data, it mainly discusses the later Roman construction projects, characteristics and influence of the city. In addition, by the means of historical comparison, compared to the characteristics of urban construction in the two stages during the Empire, we can further explore the reasons for the urban construction unique information in the Later Roman Empire.The paper is divided into three parts:introduction, text and conclusion.The first part is the introduction. It introduces the study status of domestic and foreign academic on this issue, discussing the research significance and research methods of the topic.The second part is the text, which includes three chapters.Chapter one, it primarily discusses the major city construction of the Later Roman Empire.The city construction refers to all kinds of building activities in Rome. In this chapter, firstly recommending the history of the early Roman city, which mostly involves the main construction activities in the period of Kings of Rome, Roman Republic and the early stage of the Empire. The climax of the early city-building activities provides a good example. Secondly, respectively introduces the main building types:political and military construction, public services, religious buildings, residential buildings, and in each section introduces its typical construction achievements.Chapter two, it illustrates the characteristics and reasons of urban construction of the Later Empire. In the context of the entire Empire, the environment of urban construction in the two periods had some similarities:political function of the urban construction, secularism of construction and the entertaining of buildings. Rome history was a dynamic development. As the result of specific historical environment, the characteristics of the urban construction was different from the previous. Analyzing the unique characteristics of urban construction of the Later Empire, its uniqueness included military characteristics of the city, urban construction with Christian characteristics. From the decline of the Rome Empire and Rome, city building saturation, we explore the cause of the unique characteristics.Chapter three, it introduces the impact of the city construction. Firstly, Roman architecture directly contribute to the formation of the Roman architecture style; it’s style has become today’s urban construction template. Secondly, the influence of Rome construction was great, provinces became a miniature of the Rome city. Lastly, Roman construction also has a lot of influence and enlightenment to the later ages. For example, the developed basic infrastructure of Rome are worth learning; excessive development of Rome also give us a lesson,so the development of the city should be moderate.Social problems encountered in the Rome construction are also worth thinking about in today’s society.The three part is the conclusion. It chiefly summarize the full text. In the construction of the ancient city, political function had been the primary consideration. The city of Rome construction was carried out under the guidance of politics. Because of the Empire decay, the whole urban construction moved towards to decline,and the urban construction situation also indirectly reflected the history of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.
