The plays of local opera“Three Kingdoms’ Romance” are mainly used by the actors in the performance in villages of Tunpu area in Anshun City, Guizhou Province. They are adapted by the folk artistes in Tunpu area from the novel“Three Kingdoms’ Romance” and combined with other plots of folk plays related with “Three Kingdoms’ Romance” and the author’s understanding of the novel. To a certain extent, the trend of the story’s development looks the same with the novel and there are indeed several plots and details coincident with the novel’s. However, there are also some obvious differences between them because, after all, they are not the twins from one mother. The perspective of the thesis is mostly the theories of folk literature. First of all,the first chapter will introduce the basic knowledge of the plays of local opera“Three Kingdoms’ Romance” by sufficient field work including collecting the plays from the villages and obtain the original interview data. Based on the deep reading of the novel and the plays gathered, I find the coincidence and differences between them in the second chapter by comparison and forms. The coincidence not only consisted of most of the contents and the story’s development, but some poems written by refined scholars as well. And the differences arose from the influence of other folk plays about “Three Kingdoms’ Romance”, the instinct of the local opera and the local people’s aesthetic convention. Therefore, the plays standing for folk narrative take on subtly different details and spiritual propensities in contrast with the novel scholar narrative. And then I’ll try to expose the cultural and social reasons for it. In the third chapter, I plan to analyze the narrative characteristics and aesthetic style of the plays, and try to interpret the local people’s cultural psychology and aesthetic tastes. Finally,in the last chapter, I intend to take a fresh look at the modes of the recent propagation of the plays by compared with the traditional ones, and discuss the reasons for the changes. To sum up, I research the plays of local opera“Three Kingdoms’ Romance”according to the literal theories of folk literature and try my best to explore the relations between scholar literature and folk literature, the peculiar narrative rules and artistic style of the folk works and discuss the various changes of their modes of propagation. With this, I think we’ll know better about the villagers’ spiritual propensities and cultural attitudes and the cultural changes happening in the rural society at present.
