| Taking the famous German writer Thomas Mann’s novel The Magic Mountain as research object, all kinds of trends and confused emotion of European Society were reflected before the First World War by shaping different types of characters. At the same time, by analysis of the main hero, extremists of man and troubled youth man, the paper pointed out people’s ideological trends, social relation, and confusing and loss during transferring of the old and new values at the beginning of the twentieth Century. The author explained his life attitude and thinking of life through his description of the role. While the process of writing, the author tried to permeate the modernism method of symbol to the novel. Using dialogue made the works rich in theme, different ideological content appeared to readers through dialogues. Through The Magic Mountain, life and death, love and sex, health and disease, war and peace, contradictory of transformation of art and life of Thomas Mann’s writing were clearly sorted out.The thesis is divided into six parts: first all is the introduction of the author Thomas Mann. Then contents of The Magic Mountain are summarized, and finally generalizes current situation of The Magic Mountain and research method of the thesis; The second part explains the external background and social reasons of Thomas Mann of creation The Magic Mountain; The third part is the analysis of the main characters in The Magic Mountain and show Thomas Mann’s spiritual change through mature of different roles; Through analysis of repeated art method of symbolism and dialogue, the fourth part deepened the theme of the novel and conveys adversarial relationship of how Thomas Mann coordinates art and life; The fifth part interprets the creation of The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann’s own experience, including insight of abnormal society, attitude change on art and political attitude, the real motivation of creation are concluded. Finally, the author called on everyone should learn from the young man to face the destiny. Also, people should not allow death to dominate their lives for the sake of kindness and love; The sixth part is the conclusion. Through analysis on background, novel and the writer, this article makes clearer understanding of the novel and writer’s life. The Magic Mountain conveyed the profound insight to society and human nature. Furthermore, a humanitarian writer’s ideal was performed in the novel. |
