"One mind seeks the learning of ancients and moderns; Two legs straddle the cultures of East and West", Lin Yutang is a great writer and translator. His works didn’t get attention in mainland China until the end of 1970s. Besides, there are still shortcomings in the research of essay translation especially from the perspective of translation aesthetics. The thesis makes a comprehensive and systematic research on Lin Yutang’s essay translation based on the theory of translation aesthetics.The thesis is carried out in six chapters. The first chapter is literature review. The previous researches of ancient Chinese aesthetics of translation and research activities on Lin Yutang and his essay translation works are reviewed. In the second chapter, the author introduced the aesthetically oriented translation idea of Lin Yutang and his translation standards, analyzed Lin’s translation notion and aesthetics complex based on bicultural aesthetics.Chapter three focuses on the representation of beauty in Lin’s essay translation from the perspective of the beauty of form. Combining with the related theory of aesthetic translation and Lin’s essay translation works, the author firstly analyzed the beauty of form respectively on lexical, sentential and textual level. Secondly, in the respect of the beauty of content, the author studied how Lin represented the beauty of his essay from theme, rhetorical device and image. Thirdly, from the subjective of translation aesthetical point of view, the author explained how Lin Yutang reproduced his unique beauty of his writings and essay translation. At last, conclusions are drawn, which summarize the thesis and point out the deficiencies of this thesis, calling for more exhaustive studies.
