It is well known that the famous French painter Balthus’s works has a very deep relationship with oriental culture. People before always talks about the influences taken by Chinese art on Balthus, in this text we will talk more about the influences from not only Chinese art, but also Japanese and Islamic art, in order to explore the penetration of oriental culture in Balthus’s paintings and life.The text is divided into four parts, in the first part we will talk about the influences from Chinese traditional literary books, taking<Pilgrimage to the West>and<Zhuangzi>as examples to analysis how did Balthus transfer the essence of oriental literature into his oil painting works.The second part discusses the oriental calligraphy and painting’s influences on Balthus. In this part, not only Chinese traditional calligraphy and paintings is the topic, but also Japanese Yamato-e and Islamic architecture is included at the same time.In the third part of the text, we will reveal a true Balthus by translate the book written by his wife in Japanese in order to understand the artist’s life in a better way.The fourth part is the concluding part of the paper, clarifying the enlightenment of Balthus’s practice on utilizing the oriental elements into his own work. With a heart without pride and prejudice, Balthus could absorb oriental essence and transfer it in his own way, it is really important for our Chinese art workers to learn his attitude toward the art from a different background.
