Music of twentieth-century has a unique position in the history of classical music. American composer, Samuel Barber(Samuel Barber), is one of the most important artists of this ear, a representative of the new romanticism.Barber was born in the United States while his musical style was sig nificantly influenced by traditional European music because of his st udy in Europe in early years. At the same time, 20 th century is also f amous for its boom in modern art. As a consequence, Barber’s music incorporated many modern composition techniques and mus ical elements. Unlike most of contemporary composers, Barber has more than just a dash of tenderness. His singing rhythm and extensiv e use of beautiful lyric phrases dramatically enhanced his works. Me anwhile, the unique multi-culture of U.S. made Barber in love with e mulating American idioms in his music, building his own music char acters.In this paper, the author intends to discuss Barber’s music styles as w ell as its development through the analysis of his Piano Suite "Excur sions". Given the fact that Barber is leading composer in 20 th centur y, the analysis of Barber and his music gives readers an in-depth insi ght of the music of this era and a better understanding of the new romanticism. As part of the analysis of "Excursions", the author conclu ded key performing tips based on her past performing experiences.
