Since Tang Dynasty is prosperous in society and the emperors value calligraphy very much,calligraphy reached an unprecedented prosperity during this period. In the history of early Tang,Chu Suiliang is one of the most important calligraphers. As an inheritor of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi in calligraphy, Chu also integrated the style of Ouyang Xun and Yu Shinan into his Calligraphy. Meanwhile, he learned from the calligraphy of Northern Dynasty as well as Sui Dynasty. On the other hand, Chu’s Calligraphy art effects lots of people, even some great calligraphers like Yan Zhenqing and Xue She. His achievements in calligraphy is approved by many great calligraphers like Zhang Huaiguan, Li Sizhen, Mi Fu etc., nowadays Chu script of calligraphy is fellowed by more and more modern calligraphy lovers.Generally, this paper is consisted of four chapters. In first chapter, I made a description for the historical background of Tang, and the stories of Chu Suiliang’s Life, from analysis the living environment and his experiences, we can have a completed idea of his personality. Chapter two is to study the cause of his calligraphy style. From four aspects I analysis the formation of Chu script style: family teaching, learning experiences, the influence of Emperor Tang taizong and the influence of contemporary calligraphy style. The third chapter is a main part of this paper,mainly the writer compared Chu’s Calligraphy style with another contemporary Kai Script master Ouyang Xun’s as well as the works in his different periods, which could make the context and style of Chu’s Calligraphy clearer. By comparing the works in his different periods, we can see the style and context changes obviously. In the comparison of styles of Chu and Ouyang, the writer compare them in strokes, structures and Aesthetic fashion, which show Chu’s works in a three-dimensional and multidimensional way, indeed, we can know his works clearer. In the last chapter, writer analysis the historical position and the influence to the following generations of his calligraphy style. From the search of this chapter, we can know why Chu Suiliang was called“Calligrapher masters to the mass” and from the influence his works did to the following calligraphers, we can see the inheritance of his works. Nowadays, more and more people like and learn Chu Script Calligraphy, only know his Calligraphy’s feature entirely, could we take its essence and improve our own calligraphy. So it is necessary to figure out its style clearly.
