A Brief Analysis Of The National Spirit And Formal Language Of Li Bo'an 's Ink Paintings

It wasn’t received a noticeable attention for Li Boan and his scroll figure painting – “Out of the Bayan Har” when he was alive. Rather, Li’s talent and the spirit reflected from his painting were only realized and well received with a high praise by the general public after his death. In“Out of the Bayan Har”, Li expressed his deep feelings toward the Chinese people and the nation of China through this emotional painting. This magnificent painting, which shows the vigorous character of Chinese, was created with a commitment without seeking fame and wealth during Li’s lifetime. The value of such a beautiful and emotional painting will, as the author believes, be recognized by more and more people in the future.This dissertation reports and explains unique characteristics of spirits and painting skills used by Li Boan in creating his painting- “Out of the Bayan Har”, in particular an affectionate national spirit of Chinese showing in his painting to Tibetan and his outstanding composition,styling and painting skills in creating this work. This is evidenced by case studies in this dissertation through image analysis and the literature review. Finally, this dissertation studies Li’s road of pursuing the arts, and discusses the potential motivation and inspiration from Li and his painting that can benefit the improvement of the author’s painting skills. These skills, combine with painting skills together, are more focused on learning the attitude towards the arts – an attitude for a serious artist.“Out of the Bayan Har”, as combined with the heritage of traditional Chinese painting and a modern innovative creativity of the arts, is a landmark for figure painting in Chinese ink and wash painting history. This dissertation attempts to demonstrate and discuss “Out of the Bayan Har” – a painting work by Li Boan with a high degree of unity in ideology and arts. The author wishes to express her greatest appreciation for suggestions to correct any mistakes in this dissertation and to improve her further research in this area.
