Discourse competence is the ability to constitute a complete discourse which is cohesion and coherence and to apply it, specifically refers to the language learners to organize the language materials on the subject and form the discourse that formal cohesion and semantic coherence. It is an important part of language competence. Language competence has the vital significance for improving the students’ ability of language communication.Based on coherence and cohesion, theme and rheme, and pattern of discourse, this thesis tries to apply discourse theory to cultivate the students language ability in vocational colleges. During the foreign language writing teaching, this thesis will have empirical research on students’ textual competence, namely, writing ability. The thesis will expound coherence and cohesion, theme and rheme, and pattern of discourse; Reveal the influential factors of vocational college students foreign language ability improving; Discourse theory is an important part in foreign language writing teaching and in vocational college students’ discourse ability training, Through empirical studies, it reveal the present situation of students’ discourse competence, and apply the theory discourse to the combination of reading and writing teaching, focus on targeted specific writing practice, improve the students’ textual competence. It has practical value in improving the quality of foreign language teaching and foreign language teaching reform.
