On Xia Tianmin 's Bottom Writing

"Bottom Writing" is a phenomenon that showed up China in the 1990s. A large number of works based on "Bottom" are beginning to appeanAnd at the same time, there rose a hot debate among the critics about "Bottom Writing". Tianmin Xia from Yunnan province won the third Luxun Literary Prize in 2005 with his excellent novelette Two Big Sheep. This event affirmed the status of "Bottom Writing" and proved the importance of Xia as a writer of this kind. Due to the imperfectness of studies in Xia’s novels, this essay aims to present the characteristics and drawbacks of his works by analyzing some novels.This article is divided into the following six parts.Part I is introduction.This part shows the current researches on Tianmin Xia’s literary works and puts forward the thesis on the basis of inheriting and criticizing.Part Ⅱ—Xia’s "Bottom Writing".This part first presents the value of "Bottom Writing" through tracing the history of it, and then analyzes the advantages of Xia’s writing from two aspects—his life experience and local culture.Part Ⅲ—The lower-class figures in Xia’s literature.This part displays the material and spiritual predicaments of community according to Xia’s description of farmers,women and citizens.Part Ⅳ—Xia’s attitudes toward "Bottom Writing". The author summarizes two spiritual orientation based on the analysis of the realism: inspection and criticism,compassion.Part V—The significance and limitation of Xia’s "Bottom Writing".As the highlight of this essay, this part focuses on the relations and differences between the "Bottom Writing" of Tianmin Xia and the other writers so as to further confirm the value of Xia’s writing. Meanwhile, it also points out the limitations of Xia’s "Bottom Writing".Part VII is conclusion.This part illustrates the practical significance and literary value of Xia’s "Bottom Writing" through the analysis of his works.
