Study On Bronze Mask

Chenggu bronze mask is the most characteristic Chang-Yang bronzes for its Chang-Yang local feature. Uniquely shape and the large amount make the bronze be famous for its original, and also is the most important evidence for the research of the bronze culture in Cheng-Yang area. The paper mainly focuses on the analyses and research of Chenggu bronze mask by using the archaeological theory and method.The paper is divided into four parts. The first part introduces the research status and our thoughts and methods relate to Chenggu bronze mask. The second part analyses the archaeological typology of the bronze mask according to the basic information of the unearthed bronzes. The third part makes a detail contrast with other bronzes of Shang Dynasty. The fourth part compare the Chang-Yang bronze and the Chenggu bronze mask by combining Yin Shang Dynasty, religious belief, origin of masks, application of masks in Shang Zhou perio, etc. And the assertion of the use purpose and feature is made.The paper makes a comprehensive research to Chenggu bronze mask of Shang Dynasty. The conclusion includes:the bronze masks are local unique bronzes; the beast masks represents Shang Yang City area totem, and its usage is fixed to an object of worship for hierurgy; human mask representatives ghost and god, and it is used in a religious mass as musical instrument by wearing on one’s face. The study makes an contribution to Chenggu bronze mask of Shang Dynasty related researches.
