We investigated the sequential finger movements to explore Retrieval-Induced Forgetting(RIF). Four experiments were adopted in this study. Apply the cues of letter in Experiment 1, and the result showed that no significant difference was found between retrieval practice and unpracticed items. Experiment 2 changed the letter to number as cues. The results showed that no retrieval-induced forgetting occurred still. In order to strengthen the connection of cues and categories further, Experimental 3strengthens the connection of cues and categories by used the letter as cues, and replaced the previous “two hands” pictures by “one hand” pictures. The results showed that retrieval-induced forgetting occurred. Experiment 4 used the number as cues, and employed the same design with Experimental 3, and the result showed that retrieval-induced forgetting occurred. The results suggest that retrieval-induced forgetting on sequential finger movements occurred; thereby pointing to the connection of cues and categories is a boundary condition. The results also provide the support for inhibitory account. In addition, cross-cultural difference between German and Chinese was found for retrieval-induced forgetting.
