In the early days of People’s Republic of China, many overseas Chineseintellectuals responded positively to the invitation of the government of PRC. Fullof wishes to participate in the construction of the new country, they returned. Rightin this period, in order to make those returned intellectuals have better understandingof the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the new country, as well to abandontheir capitalist, individualistic, subjectivist concepts, the CPC inculcated them withideological and political thoughts. At the same time, the CPC distinguished fromdifferent returned intellectuals when giving them ideological and political education.Eventually, the majority of them have made some changes in their conceptions andactions, and thus making contributions to promote the modernization of the newChina.This article is divided into three parts to expound on the ideological andpolitical education for returned intellectuals by the CPC at the beginning of newChina: to begin with, it will analyze the basic situation in details of those people;and then, it goes further to discuss the CPC ideological and political education forreturned intellectuals; at the end of the paper, it will make an objective evaluation tosuch education by taking historical background of that time into consideration.Integrating the case with reality, it will summarize the inspirations, from whichcontemporary ideological and political education may draw.This research not only enriches but also completes the CPC’s theory for aboutintellectual education. More importantly, it provides the government with referenceto absorb comprehensively intellectuals returned from overseas countries for theconstruction of socialist country with Chinese characteristics, in the context ofeconomic globalization.
