The contemporary later-developing countries are generally at the compresseddevelopment stage. The development of those countries is increasingly compressed ina shorter period. With each passing day the urgency of development and the difficultyof development task have been growing. The compressed development poses aserious challenge to the state autonomy of later-developing countries and thereforecauses their development predicament, which makes it imperative that the existingeconomic governance model should be restructured through the economic governancemodernization to remodel the state autonomy. The historical experience of three kinds of later-developing economicgovernance models indicates that the decline of state autonomy has caused a doubledeficiency of the state development will and governance capability and further leadsto the slide of the development performance. At the stage of the compresseddevelopment, later-developing countries need to remodel a development-oriented stateautonomy for the purpose of safeguarding their development wills and governancecapabilities. In order to remodel the state autonomy through the economic governancemodernization, the later-developing countries should take measures as follows:making the two governance subjects of bureaucratic government and diversifiedmarket entity coexist, balancing the two governance approaches of despotic powerand infrastructural power and establishing a governance framework of a powerfulstate and a strong society and realizing moderate embeddedness of the state in thesociety. Under the challenge of the compressed development, the breakthrough ofremodeling the state autonomy for later-developing countries is that through aneffective decentralization of the state to the society, the state is reasonably restrainedand adequately empowered by the society, and through a full participation of thesociety into the economic affairs enhances the legitimacy of the economic governance. Thus the development orientation of state autonomy will be guaranteed and thebottleneck of the compressed development can be broken.
