H.264/AVC is the new video coding standard developed by JVT(Joint Video Team)consisting of experts from ITU-T and ISO. Hybrid coding based on prediction and transform is still adopted by H.264. In order to improve the encoding efficiency and achieve extensive applicability, new technologies are introduced to every function module of H.264, such as multiple reference picture, intra prediction, In-the-loop deblocking filter, adaptive arithmetic entropy coding, bringing about important changes to the detail of realization. As a result, H.264 can obtain better efficiency than all previous video coding standards.In this thesis, the H.264 video codec will be implemented on Texas Instruments Company's TMS320C64x DSP chips. Such families are one of the best qualified DSPs at present.In this thesis, firstly a series of video coding standards recommended by ISO and ITU are briefly introduced. Secondly, expatiates on the fundamental knowledge and theory of video coding. Then, the basic theories, as well as key modules of the H.264 video coding standard related to this project, such as module of integer transform, rate control and the data-transmission are explained in detail. After this, introduces the characteristics of digital signal processing chip, the unique structure of TMS320C64xx DSPs and the development platform-Code Composer Studio (CCS). Lastly, based on TMS320C6000 chips, combining with the optimization experiences in actual projects, this thesis presents several optimization methods of codec programs, corresponding examples and the consequential results. By cutting down some function modules, optimizing the structure of the program and performing other work, video signals are implemented on TMS320C6415 hardware.
