This paper describes the design and realization of software and hardware of multimedia processing system on vehicle. Beyond the features of guard against theft and alarm, communication and amusement, the system provides COSD (Character on Screen Display). In the design, the microcontroller and FPGA chip are adopted. As main controller, the microcontroller meets economical demand and can communicate with I/O devices by ATA, USB and I2C protocols. In addition, FPGA chip has on-circuit-programming feature and high-speed interfaces, which are available to image-processing. Features of the system: 1. The analog signals from DVD/VCD, TV and CCD are sampled and processed. The control information of automobile and DVD/TV panel display on LCD. 2. The microcontroller can attain instruct by GPRS system and transmit JPEG data to user's mobile phone by UART interface. 3. The user can know the location of car by GPS, which offers the longitude and latitude of car. 4. The control information of automobile, such as temperature, velocity and tyre pressure, can be compressed and saved in CF card or mobile disk. In the design of hardware, P89C51RD2 chip, which belongs to a series of 89C51on Philips, acts as main controller; EP1C6 chip made in Altera Company is used to image processing; SAA7111A chip acts as the image-decoder while SAA7121 chip is the image-coder. In the design of software, the program in P89C51RD2 chip realizes ATA protocol, USB main controller protocol and JPEG standard. The structure of software on FPGA is divided into the following four parts: image-collecting and processing module, bus-coding interface module, SRAM switch and control interface module, COSD (Character on Screen Display) processing module. The program in P89C51RD2 is written by Keil C51 and has been simulated on E6000/L emulator of Nanjing Wave Company. The modules on EP1C6 chip has been programmed by Verilog HDL, which was utilized for hardware description, and has been simulated on the QUARTUS II 4.0 platform.
