Recently, the newly developing instant massaging (IM) System in Internet applications has attracted a lot of attention. Through building virtual community, instant messaging system can provide customers with real-time communications. With its evolution to communication multimedia and entering to industries, instant messaging is being investigated extensively. Whereas, there is still a lot of research to do.First of all, I studied various kinds of popular instant messaging soft wares, analyzed them, and then confirmed that the function of the instant messaging system based on JABBER protocol, and put forward the framework of the server different from the common instant messaging system. Based the function of exchange, which is the basic character of instant messaging system, online users managements, safeguarding online users and exchange massage are designed in main module of the client part.After that, we make clear the following problem: What works should IM do? How to design and implement the application protocol for IM? How to build the frame of IM's modules?So another two problems emerges in sequence: What's the trend of IM system development?
