Based on H.263 and MPEG4, H.264 is the latest low-bitrate digital video compression standard constituted by the ITU-T (International Telecommunications Union) and ISO/IEC (International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission). Compared with its prior opponents, H.264 has much better quality owing to the adoption of advanced coding techniques such as integral DCT, context-based adaptive arithmetic coding (CABAC), intra prediction, 1/4 pixel accuracy motion estimation and seven kinds of matching blocks. So H.264 has a much broader foreground in applications such as wireless communication and multimedia transmission over the networks and HDTV.The rapid development of DSP technologies leads to the flourish applications of DSPs in signal processing, real-time data communication, speech processing and graphic/image processing, etc. Therefore, the implementation of H.264 on the DSP platform is of great theoretical importance and applicable values. This dissertation first gives an introduction of the structure and features of Texas Instruments' TMS320C6000 DSPs. And then focuses on the development platform on C6000– Code Composer Studio.Based on Wintech Digital's DAM6416, the transplanting of the H.264 model JM7.3 from PC to DSP is then discussed in detail. The encountered problems and appropriate solutions are listed, and some optimization measures are presented. Then we analyzed and compared the respective results on PC and DSP platform. On this DSP developing platform, we have implemented the Baseline Profile of H.264 standard. By now, the decoder has been optimized to satisfy the real-time running requirements. Finally, the prospecting of further optimizations is also presented in the dissertation.
