H.264/AVC is the newest video coding standard of the ITU-T Video CodingExperts Group and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group, which integrates andextends a number of new video compress techniques and algorithms, such asfractional-sample accurate and variable block-size motion compensation, integertransform, intra prediction and CABAC, etc. Therefore, it is provided with excellentcoding performance and network adaptability.However, the coding and decoding complexity of H.264, which adopts complexRDO mechanism and temporal/spatial prediction, is far higher than the formerstandards and respectively twice and three times as high as H.263. Thereby,developing and studying fast algorithms for H.264 which can reduce codeccomplexity, decrease computations and improve codec speed, is provided withimportant theory and application value for promotion of H.264 as well as furtherstudy and development of video compression and communication technique.Firstly, the principle of video coding technique and the development history ofvideo coding standard is introduced in this paper. Then, H.264 is analyzed totally,which includes the critical technique of H.264, the principal of each module, theframe work and the range of H.264 application etc. The techniques of H.264 standardinter and intra frames prediction is emphasized. At last, two fast mode selectionalgorithms, which are simulated on H.264 reference software JM86, are proposedrespectively for H.264 inter and intra prediction after the recent research of H.264inter and intra frame prediction selection algorithm is talked. They mainly make useof the information of temporal and spatial correlation in the encoded adjacentmacroblocks to simplify the procedure of mode decision. The results show that, theproposed algorithm can reduces encoder complexity significantly while codingquality is only negligible decreased.
