H.264/AVC is the newest video coding standard of the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group,which integrates and extends a number of new video compression techniques and algorithms,such as fractional-sample accurate and variable block-size, motion compensation, integer transform, intra prediction and CABAC, etc. Therefore, it is provided with excellent coding performance and network adaptability.However, the coding and decoding complexity of H.264, which adopts complex RDO mechanism and temporal/spatial prediction, is far higher than former standards. Thereby, developing and studying fast algorithms for H.264 which can reduce codec complexity, decrease computations and improve codec speed, is provided with important theory and application value for promotion of H.264 as well as further study and development of video compression and communication technique.Firstly, we introduce the principle of video coding technique and the development history of video coding standard. Secondly, we discuss the critical technique of H.264, the principal of each module and the frame work. The techniques of H.264 standard inter and intra frames prediction is emphasized. Finally, several fast mode selection algorithms, which are simulated on H.264 reference software JM86, are analyzed respectively for H.264 inter and intra prediction after the recent research of H.264 inter and intra frame prediction selection algorithm is also concerned. The results show that H.264 inter and intra frame prediction fast algorithms can reduce encoder complexity significantly while coding quality is only decreased negligibly.
