With the progress of Internet and wireless technologies, more and more subscribers begin to use mobile communication terminals to access Internet. Combining wireless technologies and IPv6 becomes a hot point in current research. As network layer mobility solution, mobile IPv6 achieves to maintain mobile nodes' availability while moving around in different networks. In MIPv6, the handover delay caused by movement between different subnets would result in interrupts of communication, which can not be accepted by the real-time services such as VoIP. How to provide satisfactory services to users is a hard problem, whose key is to reduce the handover delay. This paper is supported by the China Next Generation Internet project "Research on Integrated Services of Internet and Mobile Communications". A fast handover method based on analysis of MIPv6 that sets up a tunnel between access routers is prompt, whose basic idea is to predict or react to fast handover events through information gathered by link layer and regain connection in shortest time. This paper introduces IPv6 and MIPv6 at first, then analyses the impact brought in by handover in different cases of the both. Not only the basic handover in accord with MIPv6, but also the fast handover in accord with FMIPv6 is analyzed. Communications are often bi-directional, and the impacts that the communications on two directions suffer from handover process are not equal. In addition, the performance of handover is different under different situations. The thesis takes all these factors into account, and carries out a systemic and thorough analysis to handover process, and deduces a series of formulas and conclusions. In the next, the implement mechanism is interpreted and a solution based on 802.11 is prompt with the concept of layer 2 abstraction is introduced. Test and performance evaluation are carried out on the implementation. At last, summarize the paper and give a prospect of future work. The research results mentioned in this thesis have been applied to the MIPv6 demonstration system of the Next Generation Internet Research Center of BJTU. The results of experiments demonstrate that the performance of handover can meet the demand of real-time traffics such as VoIP after FMIPv6 protocol is deployed.
