Research And Implementation Of WSDM/SNMP Translation Gateway

The development of current network management is towards distributed network management. WSDM-based network management is a new way and stage of network management. It applies XML related technologies to network management, uses XML model language to define management information, and provides powerful modeling features for structured management information in network management. It integrates the advantages of web service, which can implement the mutual operations among components across firewalls and platforms under different network environment, encapsulate the current network management, integrate the disperse applications, and provide the users with flexible interfaces.With the requirement of the WSDM-based network management system must integrate the SNMP Agent, a WSDM/SNMP translation gateway is needed between the WSDM-based manager and SNMP agent. According to the function of WSDM/SNMP translation gateway, this paper proposes an achitechture of the gateway, in which the method to convert SNMP MIB to XML Schema is studied and analyzed. Moreover the interaction mapping method and the interface of the gateway are both designed. The XML document is convenient for reading, processing as possible and achieving a clean XML structure after the specification translation. The generated XML schema definitions contain almost all information of the underlying SMI MIB module.At last, the WSDM/SNMP gateway prototype system is implemented and validated. Experiment results show that gateway use XML for carrying messages over the network along with SOAP processing, results in a significant additional delay. But with larger amounts of data, the WSDM/SNMP gateway generate less network traffic and more efficient than SNMP.
